Ban Ju-Hyun

Kim Myeung-Chan
Abstract
Objectives: This study explores the author's personal experience with a mother with an overt narcissistic personality in the socio-cultural context and covers conflicts and recovery in the relationship.

Methods: To achieve the purpose of this study, the author collected data from memory, self-observation and family interviews, as well as from psychological tests.

Results: The results derived the categories of ¡°frustration and anger towards one¡¯s mother,¡± ¡°broken relationship and personal pain,¡± and ¡°from the effort to change to the intention to understand¡±. Since the mother with an overt narcissistic personality had a parenting attitude that lacked empathy, the author had experienced negative emotions such as frustration, anxiety, anger, and loneliness. Also, due to the mother¡¯s interpersonal skills that lacked empathy, the author had experienced external conflicts with the mother for years and suffered somatic symptoms due to inner conflicts. Through this study, it allowed them to recognize and accept each other.

Conclusions: The author hopes this provides an in-depth understanding of the child of a mother with an overt narcissistic personality, offering a starting point for recovery.
